The person accused of shooting a Binghamton High School student was found hiding in the basement of a building a half block from the school.

City police say the 17-year-old suspect was located at an Oak Street residence shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday. Detectives say a handgun was recovered.

The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and criminal use of a firearm. He is to be arraigned in the youth part of Broome County Court.

Detective Captain Cory Minor said the suspect was not enrolled at Binghamton High School. His name was not released.

An 18-year-old high school student was shot in the chest near 52 Main Street around 11:15 a.m. He was reported to be in stable condition at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. In a news release, Minor described the injuries as "non-life threatening."

Investigators searched inside and outside the Oak Street apartment house where the suspect was found. They also searched other nearby properties.

A woman who was working at the building was visibly shaken a few minutes after the suspect was taken away in a police van. She said he probably gained entry to the basement through an unlocked door.
