Storm Causes Damage Across Spring Forest Cemetery in Binghamton
Mighty old trees were toppled and big limbs were strewn around the grounds of Spring Forest Cemetery in Binghamton's First Ward by Wednesday's powerful storm.
Yellow caution tape cordoned off a section on the north side of the cemetery near Prospect Street.
Spring Forest occupies 40 acres of land just south of the Route 17 expressway.
While much of the park-like cemetery was unscathed by the storm, a walking tour on Saturday revealed a significant number of trees had fallen.
In some cases, large trees landed on top of gravestones. Limbs, branches and debris blown around by the strong winds littered some parts of the cemetery.
Spring Forest is the final resting place for many of the Binghamton area's most prominent leaders dating back to the Civil War era.
Representatives of the Spring Forest Cemetery Association could not be reached for comment on the storm-related damage.
