Chenango Coutny Board of Supervisors Chairman Lawrence Wilcox issued a state of emergency immediately, and that all district schools are to be closed effective Wednesday, March 18, with the exception of staff and administrative functions.

Wilcox added that districts are to devise their own exact plans, but he expects most districts to have a staff organization day on Monday, March 16. It will also be up to the districts to decide whether to call students to school on Tuesday, March 17 in order to prepare for the closure.

“The decision to close schools is a proactive measure to prevent the spread of the virus to students, their families, and the community,” Chairman Wilcox said in a press release. “Businesses remain open and social distancing guidance should be followed.“

The school closures will last until April 14, but that could change depending on if the order is revoked or extended.

According to the New York State Department of Health as of Sunday afternoon, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Chenango County.

Wilcox also added that daycare remain open, since those are dictated by New York State.

"The State of Emergency was issued upon the recommendation of the County Health Director and County Emergency Management Director. It also authorizes emergency purchasing necessary for the response and expedites the County’s sharing of resources for better coordination to this rapidly evolving situation," the county's press release reads.

County officials say there is no travel ban in place, but it advises stay home if sick, limit contact with those who are sick, and avoid places with crowds. They also urge to reach out to your primary care provider if you show symptoms and not to go to the emergency room unless absolutely necessary.
