A local abortion-care provider is responding to the leak of a draft U.S. Supreme Court decision that appears poised to overturn Roe vs. Wade that has legalized abortion nationwide for the past fifty years.

Southern Tier Women’s Health Services in Vestal Director Sue Seibold-Simpson has issued a statement stressing safe abortion care remains legal and available in New York and the Southern Tier.

Seibold-Simpson says overturning the landmark law would set a dangerous precedent “beyond the issue of abortion.”

Long-time women’s choice advocate and founding director of Southern Tier Women’s Health Services, Peg Johnston says the ruling “affects all people but disproportionately black and brown persons and families already struggling financially.”

If the high court does overturn Roe vs. Wade, it would be up to individual states to decide reproductive rights.

Both New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf are vowing to keep abortion legal and safe in their states.

Both Democrats promise to fight for women’s health care with Wolf facing more of a battle.  The Democrat has vetoed three previous anti-abortion bills passed by his Republican-controlled legislature.  Wolf is not seeking reelection.

Hochul, who is running for her first full-term as governor of New York, said in a statement May 3: “Anyone who needs care, we welcome you with open arms.”

New York legalized abortion three years before the Roe vs. Wade ruling made it the law of the land.
