Three Charged After Downtown Binghamton Shooting

Binghamton police arrested three people as the result of an investigation into a downtown disturbance that ended with gunfire. Shots were fired outside a building at the Woodburn Court II apartment complex at 100 Susquehanna Street a few minutes before 3 p.m. Monday. There was no indication that anyone was injured in the incident. Police officers and detectives secured the scene following the shooting. After a few hours, investigators obtained a search warrant for an apartment in a Carroll Street building. The search turned up a disassembled 9mm Taurus handgun and a half-ounce of cocaine.

Attempted Murder: Binghamton Teen Charged in West Side Shooting

A Binghamton youth has been arrested after a man was shot in the head while riding in a car on the city's West Side. Authorities said the 17-year-old boy was charged with second-degree attempted murder in connection with the shooting that occurred around 7:10 p.m. Sunday. The incident happened near 34 Schubert Street. The suspect, who was arrested on Tuesday, also faces charges of reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon. According to a police department news release, he will be arraigned in Youth Part Court.

Downtown Binghamton's Landmark Nut Shop May Close Soon

M&D-R-Nuts has been a downtown fixture for decades. Owner David Bradstreet is preparing to close the store next month. Bradstreet has operated the small shop at 45 Court Street since 2010. He told WNBF News he plans to shut the place down around June 10. Bradstreet suggested there's a possibility the business could live on - perhaps at another downtown Binghamton location. He said there are "still a couple of options up in the air." Ron Sall - owner of the nearby Sall-Stearns men's clothing store - said he had offered to buy the business. But, he said, Richard David, the former mayor who owns the building where M&D-R-Nuts is located, has a different vision for the space.

ALDI Recalls Cream Cheese Spread Products In New York State

On May 7, 2024, Aldi stores, in cooperation with Schreiber Foods, Inc. issued a product recall on Happy Farms Whipped Cream Cheese Spread, Chive & Onion Cream Cheese Spread, Cream Cheese Spread, and Strawberry Cream Cheese Spread products. The reason for this recall is due to potential salmonella. The cream cheese spread products have been sold in select ALDI stores throughout 29 states and the District of Columbia, including New York State, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Vehicle Erupts in Flames After Plunging Off Route 17 Near Endwell

Eastbound traffic on two busy roadways east of Endwell came to a halt after a vehicle went over an embankment along Route 17 and became engulfed by fire. The crash occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Westover section of the town of Union. A vehicle that had been traveling east veered off the expressway and burst into flames. The driver of the vehicle apparently was able to extricate himself. He apparently was not seriously injured. He was evaluated at the scene by the Union Volunteer Emergency Squad. Traffic in the eastbound lanes of Route 17 and Route 17C was backed up for a time as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

Binghamton West Side Residents Complain About Car Crashes

Some people who live in a Binghamton neighborhood are expressing frustration over the number of vehicle collisions that have been happening near their homes. The latest crash on Leroy Street happened Wednesday afternoon when two people were injured at the intersection with Millard Avenue. In that collision, one vehicle wound up on its side and the other came to rest after traveling up an embankment next to the porch of a home.

Neglect Of Over 100 Animals: Arrests Made In New Berlin Farm Case

In a release from the New York State Police Troop C based in Sidney on May 21, 2024, it was announced that four people were arrested in connection with a case of over 100 neglected animals at a farm in New Berlin. A search warrant was served at properties on Clark Land and Pig Fram Lane in New Berlin on April 26, 2024. According to the New York State Police, during the search, over two dozen animals were found deceased, along with an additional 107 neglected animals which were removed, including horses, swine, cattle, sheep, goats, a llama, dogs, and cats. The four individuals were arrested on May 16, 2024, and have each been charged with felonies and misdemeanors from the Agriculture and Markets Law.

JC to Hold Hearing on Davis College Apartment Complex Proposal

A massive redevelopment plan for the old Davis College campus in Johnson City will be discussed at the next meeting of the village planning board. A group called Square Deal Partners LLC hopes to acquire the 13-acre property between Riverside Drive and the Susquehanna River for a major housing project. Eddy Pezzino of Square Deal Partners told WNBF News plans call for the creation of "close to 75 units" of housing at the site. Pezzino said the goal of the developers is to create "good housing that's affordable" for young professionals working in Broome County. He said the project would include some "really nice amenities" to create "a community within a community."

Broome County's Last A&W Restaurant is Closing Its Doors

The A&W/Long John Silver's combination eatery at 1919 Vestal Parkway East has been in operation for the past two decades. Owner Manjot Dhillon told WNBF News he expects the combined restaurant will shut down in about two weeks. In recent months, a sign outside the restaurant indicated the business was for sale. But a new operator wasn't found and the sign now announces the place will be "closing soon."

Endicott Bakery Temporarily Closed After Building Fire

A fire forced three people out of an Endicott apartment and resulted in the temporary closure of a business located in the building. The blaze at 1405 Watson Boulevard was reported shortly after 1:30 a.m. Thursday. A smoke alarm alerted the residents of a second-floor apartment. They were able to leave the building safely. Endicott Fire Chief Joseph Griswold told WNBF News the blaze is believed to have started in the attic. He said it likely was caused by an electrical problem. Griswold said the fire caused moderate damage, primarily to the attic area of the building. The apartment, which sustained some damage, was uninhabitable.
