Southern Tier Law Enforcement Get Donations of Alert Decals

Several area law enforcement agencies have new decals and access to tracking equipment to help deal with and find residents with certain conditions that leave them non-verbal or prone to wandering thanks to a donation from the Vestal Elks Club.

Residents can pick up decals to advise authorities concerning autism, dementia, brain injury or other conditions at the front desks of Binghamton, Johnson City, Vestal, Endicott, Owego and Port Dickinson Police or the Broome and Tioga Sheriff’s Offices.

The decals let officers or other first responders know if they are dealing with a person who may need special considerations as they may be confused or not able to respond to commands normally.

Law enforcement agencies are also involved in a program to provide families of patients who may wander, like those with dementia or autism, with tracking equipment that allows searchers to use technology to quickly find someone who has wandered off.
