Five people are facing charges after police in Cortland say they found a methamphetamine manufacturing operation in a Groton Avenue apartment.

Police were called when residents say they smelled a strong chemical odor coming from the unit.

Precious Short, Jeffery Stevens, Christopher Gillet, Daniel Gardner and Casey Schunk are charged with possession of a controlled substance, unlawful manufacture of meth and conspiracy.

Everyone in the apartment house was evacuated while emergency crews cleared out the hazardous materials.

One police officer had to be treated for respiratory issues.
