Broome County says it can save $4 million over the next 20 years by using solar power.

The County broke ground on a new solar farm on 20 acres in the Town of Conklin.

Two solar systems will power several county buildings.  SolarCity is to install and maintain the systems.

SolarCity will own the systems and is offering the County a power purchase agreement at no upfront cost.

The location of the new solar farm was purchased by the county from the local development group called “the Agency” for a small price.

Construction on the site is to begin next week and officials hope to have the solar panels generating energy by the spring.
