U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is calling on the U.S. State Department to “do everything within their power” to get the suspect in the murder of Binghamton University nursing student Haley Anderson returned to the United States.

The New York Democrat issued a statement March 15 saying he wants federal officials to make the extradition of 22 year old Orlando Tercero from Nicaragua a top priority.

Police in Binghamton say Tercero fled to the Central American Country after the Westbury, Long Island woman was killed in his Oak Street apartment.

Authorities in Nicaragua this week confirmed theY had Tercero, who is also a Binghamton University nursing student, in custody.

Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell has said he is assembling evidence to be presented to a grand jury so an indictment can be turned over to federal officials with the hopes of having Tercero returned to Broome County to face charges.
