Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]The Southern Tier’s representative to the New York State Senate is calling a proposal from Ithaca's mayor for a supervised injection site for heroin addicts ill-advised.

Former Broome County Undersheriff, Republican Senator Fred Akshar II says Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick’s “Ithaca Plan” for supervised injection sites and increased treatment programs will not curb the ballooning problem of heroin and opioid addiction in New York State, uses people as guinea pigs and is totally unacceptable to him.

Ithaca’s Police Chief also said he opposes Myrick’s plan for dealing with addicts.

Similar programs are in existence in Europe, Canada and Australia, but not in the United States.

The “Ithaca Plan” would have to receive state and federal approval.
