The Salvation Army in Binghamton is marching to the North Side.

The charity is planning to develop a multi-purpose facility on a vacant lot that would include commercial grade kitchens, job training and a community garden.

The North Side has long been looking for a source of groceries and is now facing another loss with the planned closing of the Kmart in the Binghamton Plaza, which had a small grocery section.

The Salvation Army development is expected to cost $5.5 million and is slated to be in operation by spring of 2018 if it lands the financial backing it needs.
