Construction work for Broome County's second Planet Fitness gym was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic but the facility now is expected to open soon.

The new facility in the Price Chopper Plaza off Glenwood Avenue on Binghamton's West Side was approved by the city planning commission early this year.

The club was expected to open in May but the project was delayed by several months due to the pandemic.

John Hrinda, who oversees dozens of Planet Fitness gyms in upstate New York, said the Binghamton facility will occupy 21,500 square feet of space. The site had been used as a Goodwill Industries store until it closed in October 2017.

A pre-sale tent has been set up in the parking lot near the building.

The Binghamton Planet Fitness gym now is scheduled to open on December 14. The new site is expected to relieve some of the crowding that's occurred in recent years at the Planet Fitness location in the University Plaza in Vestal.

Current New York state pandemic guidelines require all gyms to close at 10 p.m. every day.
