Pharmacy Automation Firm to Move Jobs from JC to Binghamton

A technology company is planning to relocate part of its Broome County operations to a site in Binghamton's First Ward.

The pharmacy automation firm originally known as Innovation Associates is expected to move some of its operations from Johnson City to the Charles Street Business Park.

Innovation Associates, which was founded in 1972, changed its name to "iA" in October 2020.

In a news release issued Tuesday, Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham said iA plans to relocate 85 workers into a building that's been occupied by SaveAround.

The mayor said iA will create an "innovation hub" at the site with a technology center and employee training facility.

The facility is to include a testing space where iA will be able to demonstrate its software and robotics systems to prospective customers.

According to the City Hall news release, iA is leasing 38,000 square feet of space in the First Ward building. That's about two-thirds of the available space at the site. The company is expected to move into the business park in late summer or early fall.

SaveAround acquired the building in 2017 for $1.5 million. It had been constructed less than a decade earlier for Emerson Network Power.

The Charles Street Business Park was announced with great fanfare in late 2007 as a state-supported brownfield redevelopment project. The property previously had been used by several businesses, including Anitec Image Corporation.

What had been billed as a "state-of-the-art urban technology park" never materialized.

Most of the 32-acre site remains vacant. The parking lot of the SaveAround building was virtually empty Tuesday afternoon.
