In his 3rd State of the County address, held this year at a former Binghamton factory nearing completion of its redevelopment into housing and commercial space, the County Executive highlighted more projects to reclaim blighted properties with special emphasis on growth in Johnson City.  Garnar says there is a lot of opportunity in the village with the location of Binghamton’s new Pharmacy School and work to move the Decker School of Nursing across the river from the Vestal Campus.  Garnar also pointed to the start of the demolition of the former Endicott Inn and a property on North Page Avenue in the Town of Union.  The Democrat says the County is partnering with the local development group: The Agency, to rehabilitate “homes block by block.”

Garnar said part of improving the overall health of the community lies in the continued fight against drug abuse. He is calling for a new treatment program at the jail.

Other initiatives highlighted in the address were a new one-stop shop complex for veterans’ services and programs in the Town of Binghamton and Public Safety system upgrades.

Garnar, as with past State of the County messages, will be taking the ideas on the road. The Executive and members of his staff will be visiting several communities in the county to further outline the proposals in the speech and get feedback
