Officials in the Village of Owego are looking at possibly getting rid of the Owego Historic Preservation Commission.

The Commission currently approves or rejects any visual changes to buildings in the historic district.

Dozens of residents turned out for a public hearing October 16 on the idea of abolishing the commission.

While some said preserving the commission is important to maintain the integrity of the historic district, others said the panel has hampered attempts to make improvements or conduct maintenance on some properties.

The Village Board could vote on the proposal at its next meeting November 6.
