One Dead in Crash on Route 17 Near Deposit

New York State Police say the driver of a van traveling on Route 17 near Deposit at 3:23 p.m. June 9 fell asleep, causing the van, carrying seven people to leave the road and roll over several times.

One passenger in the van, 70 year old Dennis Pitts of Rochester, was pronounced dead at Wilson Hospital.  Five other occupants of the vehicle suffered non life-threatening injuries.

The crash closed a portion of the westbound highway for several hours near exit 84 in the Town of Sanford.
