21 people graduated on Friday, June 14, 2024. No, these are not high school or college graduates, these are Correction Academy graduates.

The Class of 2024 was introduced and recognized in a ceremony by the Broome County Sheriff's Office on Friday, as graduates of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Academy.

The new recruits completed almost three months of training which included learning defensive tactics, studying law, and other aspects required for the job.

Of the 21 newly graduated corrections officers, two will be assigned to the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, two will head to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, and 17 will be assigned to the Broome County Correctional Facility. Those 17 began their new careers today (June 17, 2024.)

Congratulations to these outstanding men and women on their graduation today and to Corrections Academy Director Shawn Nalepa for all he’s done to prepare them. Our graduates represent the continuation of our ongoing commitment to excellence in the Broome County Corrections Division and our commitment to the safety and well-being of our incarcerated individuals, as well as those charged in their care. Our graduates will also serve as welcome support and relief for our hardworking men and women currently serving in the Corrections Division. - Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar

The Broome County Sheriff's Office notes that members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division oversee the Broome County Correctional Facility through a variety of specialized roles, including investigations, classifications, field training, instruction, and Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team among other responsibilities.
