Nine Homeless After Johnson City Fire That Killed Several Dogs

Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that raced through a three-story house in Johnson City.

The New Year's Day blaze at 10-12 Dartmouth Street was reported shortly before 6 p.m.

Several people called to report the fire in the three-family building located west of Massachusetts Avenue.

According to Johnson City fire marshal Bob Blakeslee, the first units on the scene encountered heavy fire engulfing the rear portion of the structure.

Firefighters searched the burning house and determined no one was inside.

A second alarm was called by the incident commander as the blaze started to extend to three neighboring buildings. Off-duty village firefighters and a Binghamton Fire Department unit responded to the scene.

The fire was brought under control after about two hours. Firefighters stayed at the scene for several more hours to fully extinguish the blaze.

Four children and five adults were displaced by the fire. They were assisted by the Red Cross.

Although no serious injuries were reported to residents or firefighters, several dogs died in the blaze.

All three floors of the house sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. The building's roof partially collapsed.

The siding on three neighboring structures sustained some damage.
