New York Governor Kathy Hochul is urging people to wear masks in indoor public settings as scientists work to learn more about the newly identified Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Governor Hochul said Monday, November 29 that the state won’t be “defenseless” if everyone wears masks indoors, gets vaccinated, gets tested, washes their hands and stays home when sick.

During her afternoon briefing, the Democrat turned to authorities with the Wadsworth Laboratory who said a check of the international sequence databases minutes before the news conference there had been no finding of the Omicron variant in New York State but the state had received notification that some cases had arrived in Ontario, Canada.

Director of Virology, Doctor Kirsten St. George says Wadsworth recently established a consortium of four labs in New York to assist with sequencing and labs around the world are sharing sequencing data to expand the surveillance of varying strands of the coronavirus.
