On January 6, 2024, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul proposed expanding New York’s child tax credit for more than 2.75 million children in the Empire State.

This 2025 State of the State proposal would mean an annual tax credit of up to $1,000 per child under four years of age, and up to $500 per child from ages four through sixteen.

The current credit provides only up to $330 per child. Governor Hochul notes that this proposal would represent the single largest boost to New York’s child tax credit in its history.

From groceries to strollers to kids’ clothes, the cost of living and raising a family is still too damn high, and that’s why we’re proposing a massive increase in New York’s child tax credit to put up to $1,000 per kid back in the pockets of hardworking families. As New York’s first mom governor, I know how hard it can be for parents to make ends meet and I’ll never stop fighting to make New York more affordable for every family. - New York State Governor Kathy Hochul

As an example, Governor Hochul notes that a family of four with a toddler and school-age child, and a household income up to $110,000, would receive a credit of $1,500 per year, which is almost $1,000 more per year versus the current program.

This proposed expansion by Governor Hochul adds that it will put money back in the pockets of around 1.6 million New York State families including over 2.75 million children.

In the Southern Tier of New York, this proposal would benefit 51,000 households including 89,000 children. For more information on this proposal, visit New York State Governor Kathy Hochul's website.
