New York Firefighters Get Funds to Recruit Volunteers
Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]The Firefighters Association of the State of New York is being awarded $1.5 million in a Federal Safer Grant to be used to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters.
FASNY says volunteer departments increasingly find it hard to recruit members due to more call volume and time challenges.
The four-year Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant is awarded by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
Officials say the goal of the FASNY recruitment campaign is to educate the public on the important service of volunteer firefighters and to try to get more people to sign on.
Fire department opportunities extend to more than active firefighters going into burning buildings and include administrative, office and traffic control positions.
People who are interested in volunteering are always encouraged to stop into their neighborhood fire station when someone is at the facility to find out more.
