The New York Times and others cite three people directly familiar with her plans who were not authorized to speak publicly as saying the Democrat is indeed planning to launch her campaign. Reports on October 27 indicated the official announcement was possible as early as October 28.

New York’s top prosecutor will enter the race as a formidable candidate for the Democratic nomination that already is sure to pit her against Governor Kathy Hochul who wasted little time after taking office in August to confirm her plans to seek a full term.

James’ decision to enter the race will come just months after issuing a damning report that drove former Governor Andrew Cuomo from office in a sexual harassment scandal.

James is also known for her frequent legal tussles with former President Donald Trump. She is the first woman elected as New York’s attorney general and the first Black person to serve in the role.

Political watchers say James place in New York history makes her run for governor even more interesting as she will face another history-maker in Governor Hochul who is the first woman to sit in the executive office.
