New Federal Prosecutor Confirmed for Binghamton Area

Carla Freedman has been sworn to lead the federal prosecutor’s office in the Northern District of New York, the first woman ever confirmed to that position.

The longtime assistant on Friday, October 8 became U.S. attorney for a region that includes Syracuse, Binghamton and Albany and covers northern New York.

She was nominated by President Joe Biden on August 10 and confirmed by the Senate Tuesday, October 5. She succeeds acting U.S. Attorney Antoinette Bacon, who was never confirmed by the Senate.

Until her appointment and confirmation, Freedman had been an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Syracuse office, starting in 2007.  From February, 2018 to this year she was also a Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney and Narcotics Chief and was Deputy Narcotics Chief from 2016-2018.

The Syracuse native was an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan for 16 years before joining the U.S. Attorney's office.

According to a news release from the Northern District, Freedman has prosecuted a variety of offenses with a focus on organized crime, violent crime, and drug trafficking offenses.
