New Binghamton Crime Intelligence Center to Open in April

An expanded crime analysis center is expected to become operational at Binghamton City Hall this spring.

The 2,900-square-foot facility is being developed in the former city fire department headquarters on State Street.

State government will provide $500,000 in computer hardware, software and other equipment for the intelligence center. It will have five times the space of the current unit located nearby in the basement of the building.

The Binghamton intelligence center is one of ten such operations operated by the state in partnership with local police agencies.

In a news release, Mayor Richard David said the facility "will be the regional nerve center for law enforcement intelligence and multi-jurisdictional crime fighting."

The fire department headquarters at city hall was shut down late last year. The operation was moved to a temporary site at Court and Carroll streets.

Construction work for the project began a few months ago. The floor of the old fire station garage needed to be stabilized because of structural problems that developed after decades of use by heavy trucks.
