Delaware District Attorney Shawn J. Smith stated the sentence was not perfect, but that it spared the children the trauma of trial and would permit them to focus on recovering from their ordeal.
According to the report, Samantha's father read a statement to the court stating that he believed the murder had been motivated by the gender of the unborn child - “He had wanted a boy.” Samantha’s father has since adopted the children, two girls.
As a result of their thorough and comprehensive investigation, their work in preparing the case, and their work with the victims’ family, these amazing public servants ensured that Mr. Garnier will spend thirty years behind bars. While this tragedy has shaken our community, I am proud of how Delaware County responded to it. We were able to secure this conviction without forcing two young children to testify about the horrific things they witnessed. - Delaware County District Attorney Shawn J. Smith
