Authorities say the fire occurred on Route 363 - the Brandywine Highway - around 1:50 p.m. Thursday.

The 51-year-old man who had been operating the motorcycle sustained burns to his hands when he tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center for treatment.

A fire department spokesman said the southbound lanes of the highway were closed to traffic for about 15 minutes. He said the motorcycle was destroyed by the blaze.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
