New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says he now wants all hospitals to be priority-testing children presenting symptoms of a rare outbreak that might be associated with the coronavirus.

A 9-year-old boy in an region of New York state with relatively few cases of coronavirus is now recovering from the rare inflammatory syndrome thought to be related to the virus.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said May 12 that the state was investigating about 100 cases of the Kawasaki disease-like syndrome.

A 5-year-old in New York City, a 7-year-old from Westchester County and an 18-year-old girl from Suffolk County have died.

Cuomo is advising all hospitals to prioritize COVID-19 testing for children presenting with symptoms of the syndrome that affects blood vessels and organs.

After news came out in early May of the incidents downstate, the New York State Department of Health put out an advisory to hospitals and health care providers to watch for symptoms of high fever, skin discoloration, abdominal pain, diarrhea, difficulty eating and vomiting in youngsters, symptoms not typically associated with COVID-19. Those symptoms of the coronavirus primarily exhibit as respiratory distress.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has put New York State in the forefront of the investigation into the syndrome.
