Monument to Be Moved To Binghamton Veterans Park

A memorial monument honoring a Broome County man who was killed in action in Vietnam will be moved to a more prominent location in Binghamton.

The monument honors Sergeant Lawrence Peters, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor following his death on September 4, 1967.

A parade and ceremony are planned on Saturday as the monument is relocated from its current site in downtown Binghamton.

The monument is located near the northwest corner of the former Post Office Annex building at 120 Chenango Street. It will be moved to the Southside Veterans Park on Conklin Avenue.

Frederick Kelley of the John W. Thurston Detachment of the Marine Corps League said members of the military and civilians are invited to participate in the relocation event.

The parade is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Saturday at the monument site on Chenango Street. It will proceed south to Exchange Street and continue to the park on the South Side.

Kelley said there will be a memorial ceremony at the park. The flagpole at the park has been cleaned in preparation for the relocation of the monument.

Kelley expressed appreciation to the city Parks Department and Mayor Richard David for their assistance in the project.

Kelley said work on the effort to move the monument has been going on for years. Although there is a flagpole at the current site, the monument is inconspicuous. Many people walk by it without event noticing that it's there.
