McDonald’s to Leave Binghamton Neighborhood After 55 Years

A McDonald's restaurant near the site of the chain's first Binghamton operation is about to close its doors.

A manager at the McDonald's location at 3 West State Street said the business is expected to close on September 30. The manager said people who work at the North Side restaurant would be offered jobs at other area locations.

The restaurant is operated by Lattner Enterprises. Owner Douglas Lattner could not be reached to comment on the decision to shut down the West State Street unit. The company operates several other McDonald's restaurants in the region.

County records show the property where the restaurant is located is owned by Robert Skrabalak of Susquehanna County. He could not be reached to discuss plans to the site.

People who work in the area said they had heard the restaurant would be closing but they didn't know what would become of the site.

McDonald's has been a fixture in that section of the North Side for more than 55 years.

The first McDonald's restaurant in Binghamton opened in July 1963 across the street from the current location. The new building has been in operation for 15 years.

Customers who were told of the planned closing said they were disappointed by the decision.

Representatives at McDonald's corporate media office did not respond to a request seeking comment about the move to shut down the North Side restaurant.
