Authorities say the Susquehanna County man was struck by a Norfolk Southern train around 4 a.m. Saturday.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, deputies found James Lewis of Hallstead lying along the tracks. He was discovered near Conklin and Corbettsville Roads.

Investigators say Lewis had sustained serious head and lower leg injuries. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not released.

Detectives believe Lewis had been laying across the railroad tracks when he was hit by the southbound freight train. They said alcohol and drugs appeared to have been a factor.

Lewis was charged with trespassing on railroad property. He was issued an appearance ticket for Conklin town court.
