Man Guilty of Possessing Gun Near Binghamton High School

A Johnson City man faces a long prison term after he was convicted by a jury for possessing a loaded gun at an apartment house across from Binghamton High School.

Prosecutors say 35-year-old Amin Rashid was found guilty of two felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He also was convicted of first-degree perjury, a felony.

Authorities say Rashid was arrested by Binghamton police on September 7. He had been accused of possessing a loaded .38 caliber revolver at 99 Oak Street, just a few steps west of Binghamton High School.

According to the Broome County District Attorney's office, Rashid lied under oath in October during a grand jury proceeding. He later was indicted for perjury by another grand jury.

Rashid is to be sentenced as a persistent violent felony offender on June 7. He faces a minimum sentence of 16 years to life in prison and a maximum of 28 years to life.
