A five-story building in the heart of downtown Binghamton is being renovated to make it more attractive as a student housing complex.

The street level of the location at 23 Henry Street had been best known as the home of the Burger Mondays restaurant for more than a decade. That business closed its doors last February.

Foundation Housing of Syracuse had been developing plans to modernize the apartments on the top four floors of the structure, which was built in 1890. The property was acquired four years ago for $2.2 million.

Steve Vassallo, a Foundation Housing founder, presented details of the renovation project to city officials last year. He has not been available to comment on the status of the work that's now underway.

According to Foundation Housing, the company exists "to inspire and empower the next generation of college students."

Foundation's website states the Binghamton building is now being leased for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Plans called for 4-bedroom and 5-bedroom apartment units on each of the upper floors of the building.

The revised apartment layout calls for a total of 52 bedrooms, four fewer than had existed in the previous configuration.

The project calls for some limited work to the exterior of the historic building.

When the project was described for the Binghamton Planning Commission, the developers said they had expected the Burger Mondays restaurant to remain in the building while the upper floors were being renovated.

But the restaurant owners announced in January a decision to close the business without offering any explanation.

Now that the restaurant is gone, it's not known what new use is planned for the first floor.
