Work has started on a $2.9 million project to resurface and improve traffic flow on a section of Route 17C in the town of Union.

The work will be done on East Main Street between Arthur Avenue in Endicott and Hooper Road in Endwell.

Crews have been working at a few intersections over the past couple of weeks.

The project will focus on a 1.3 mile stretch of East Main Street. In addition to repaving, a sidewalk is to be constructed on the south side of the roadway between Kent Avenue and the Hooper Road interchange.

Ten sidewalk curb ramps will be upgraded to meet federal Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.

Travel lanes will be reconfigured to make left turns easier and safer. Instead of the current format of two lanes in each direction, there will be three lanes between North Street and Route 26. There will be one lane for traffic in each direction, along with a center left-turn lane.
