Lockheed Grant Helps B.C.C. Students Stay in School During Emergencies
The SUNY Broome Community College Foundation is welcoming a large grant from a large local defense contractor.
Lockheed Martin in Owego has been donated $75,000 to support the Student Emergency Fund to help BCC students in times of financial hardship.
The Broome Community College Foundation created the Student Emergency Fund in early 2020 in order to help students who fall on financial hard times to be able to stay enrolled in school. The fund helps students cover an unexpected bill of less than $1,000 like a medical bill, back up child care expenses, utility or internet access. Many of those problems surfaced as challenges during the pandemic last year.
To date, the emergency fund committee has received 245 applications and provided nearly $130,000 in emergency funds.
In addition to the big gift from Lockheed Martin, the Foundation has been moved by donations from many people who have stepped forward to contribute.
