A Johnson City police dog will be better protected at work thanks to a nationwide campaign through GROUPON and the charity, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Johnson City Police K9, C.J. is getting a donated bullet resistant vest. The 7 year old Dutch Shepherd is trained in patrol, tracking, evidence recovery, narcotics scent detection and in protecting his handler.  He works with Patrolman Brian Berdine.

Vested Interest in K9s is a charity with the mission of providing bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement dogs throughout the United States. Last year, 66 K9s were outfitted with the protective gear. There is currently a waiting list of over 20 police dogs needing vests.

Each vest costs $950.  Online donations can be made through Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. at www.vik9s.org.
