I didn't have mine stolen but I had to replace my converter recently. Because of the kind of gas that is used, more people (including me) have to replace their converter so you know the exorbitant cost.

New York State is doing what it can by introducing a piece of legislation that they hope will slow down the surge in catalytic converter theft. They are looking to impose restrictions on the purchase, sale, and possession of the device by vehicle dismantlers and scrap processors.

Find out if your car is a target - Find out if the catalytic converter in your vehicle can be easily removed. If unsure, then ask your garage guy because we will have an answer for you.

Not a bad idea to etch your VIN onto your converter, this can help identify the real owner of it, in the event yours is stolen.

Park in a well-lit area - It's even better if you can park it by a public entrance and move your car around once in a while.

Install an anti-theft device or motion-sensitive lights - This will not only help stop catalytic converter theft but it can help you catch someone if they try to break in your vehicle.

Paint your catalytic converter - As odd as it sounds, this is a way to stop buyers from purchasing your stolen catalytic converter. Some police departments offer programs to paint your convertor for free.

It might be a good idea to check with your insurance company and make sure that you have the right coverage in the event that your catalytic converter is stolen.
