If you’ve spent any time in Owego, chances are you’ve stopped by The Community Shop on North Avenue or heard someone mention it.

For generations of families, The Community Shop has been more than a store; it’s been the heart of Owego’s daily life. Now, after 65 years in business, the owners have announced they are closing their doors, marking the end of an era in this New York community.

A Much-Loved Owego Fixture Closes Its Doors

According to a message shared with customers, the store’s last day of regular business will be Thursday, April 30.

Until then, customers can still enjoy regular hours, favorite lunch specials, fresh Roma’s bread, Boar’s Head meats, and the fully stocked beer cooler that has made the shop a local staple.

After April 30, the next phase begins. Starting Friday, May 1, the shop will begin liquidation sales. The owners also noted that if you still have a gift certificate, it will be honored through the final day of regular business.

Community Reflections and Fond Memories

If you scroll through the comments online, it quickly becomes clear that this little shop meant a lot to the people who grew up around it.

The Tioga United Way posted on Facebook, congratulating the owners on their retirement, calling the store “a staple in this community” and thanking them for decades of service to Owego and New York’s Southern Tier.

Many customers echoed that sentiment.

Tammy wrote that her childhood memories of stopping there after school will always stay with her.

Mary McDonald shared that the store and the family behind it have always been about supporting the community and thanked them for decades of service.

These heartfelt comments capture why The Community Shop mattered so much. It wasn’t just a place for lunch or groceries; it was where memories were made, and a sense of community thrived.

How The Community Shop Shaped Local Identity

Small neighborhood shops like this become part of a town’s identity. They’re where you run into neighbors, where kids stop in after school, and where generations of families build routines.

For many in Tioga County and across New York’s Southern Tier, The Community Shop was that special place. After 65 years, the owners say it’s time to retire. Judging by the outpouring of support online, the community is grateful, even if it’s hard to picture North Avenue without the shop’s familiar storefront.
