For decades, the name Mary Theresa Simpson carried heartbreak in Upstate New York. The 12-year-old’s 1964 murder remained one of Elmira’s oldest unsolved crimes, leaving generations wondering if answers would ever come. Now, more than six decades later, investigators say the case has finally reached a resolution thanks to modern science and relentless persistence.

Unsolved Mystery Haunts Upstate New York for Decades

Mary Theresa Simpson was killed in March 1964. What followed was years of unanswered questions, countless hours of investigation, and a family forced to live with uncertainty. Even as time passed and investigators retired, the case never truly left the department’s radar. Evidence was preserved carefully, even long before DNA technology existed, which ultimately made today’s breakthrough possible.

Breakthrough Achieved with DNA and Genealogy

In late 2024, investigators began revisiting the case using updated forensic tools. Partnerships with Russell Sage College, the FBI, and other agencies opened the door to advanced DNA testing and genetic genealogy. The DNA sample itself was incredibly small, essentially invisible to the naked eye, yet it contained enough information for scientists to build a genetic profile.

That profile was compared against public genealogy databases, allowing investigators to trace family connections and narrow down a suspect.

Investigators Name Long-Sought Suspect

Through this process, authorities identified Alfred Murray as the person responsible for Mary Theresa Simpson’s death. He had already passed away in 2004, meaning no criminal trial will occur, but investigators consider the case officially solved. For the family and community, that confirmation provides a sense of long-awaited closure even without a courtroom outcome.
