What I Miss About Halloween From When I Was a Kid
Halloween is a week away (October 31st) and recently I wrote about "when is it too old to trick-or-treat. For years, the kids and I would take a quick trip near the house and then head to Poplar Hill, "where the big candy was."
I decided to ask my 19 year old daughter, Tara if she was going to go this year. Her response was "Unfortunately, I believe I've aged out of trick or treating." I forget that she's 19 and not 9 any more.
As I reminisce about childhood memories of Halloween, I can't help but miss the experiences that made the holiday in my hometown so special. We would carve pumpkins and put candles in them to light up the night.
Trick-or-treating was the best part with everyone in different costumes, from ghosts and witches to superheroes and princesses. Whether you were going for a scary vibe or channeling your inner superhero, the costumes made the whole season more magical.
We also can't forget the excitement of knocking on the door and shouting "trick or treat." One thing I really miss about Halloween from my childhood is how carefree it all was. You could house-to-house without a care in the world.
Let's not forget the after-trick-or-treating shenanigans with the late night revelry of toilet-papering the trees at your friend's house. It was a badge of honor if your house was chosen.
There was nothing better then hearing mom yell up the stairs on the morning of November 1st, "Glenn, look out your bedroom window, I think your "friends' stopped by the house last night." Cherished memories that make me smile and something that I'll never forget.
I know times are different now and for that I feel bad for our kids in so many ways. What memories come to mind when you think of Halloween?
