AARP Wants To Honor Outstanding New York Volunteers
If you know someone in New York who is always to help others, then now may be a great time to give them the recognition they deserve. AARP New York is accepting nominations for the 2026 Andrus Award for Community Service.

This is an award that honors New Yorkers age 50 and older who are making a real difference through volunteer work in their own communities.
Celebrating Everyday Community Heroes
It could be someone who is always helping a neighbor, supporting a local family, volunteers at events, or they just show up whenever people need the help. AARP says the award is meant to shine a light on people whose kindness and dedication inspire others across the state.
Nominees must be at least 50 years old and their work must be volunteer based, not paid. Couples who volunteer together can also be nominated. The service should help improve the community and encourage others to get involved as well.
A Volunteer Who Made A Difference
Last year’s New York winner was Lt. Joan Martinez, a volunteer with the NYPD’s 24th Precinct in Manhattan. As an unpaid civilian volunteer, she helps patrol her neighborhood to help residents and business owners feel safer.
How To Submit A Nomination
The deadline to submit a nomination is August 31. If someone in your community comes to mind while reading this, AARP New York encourages you to nominate them. You can learn more or request a nomination form by emailing nyaarp@aarp.org or by visiting AARP Andrus Award.
