Move Out Project Collects Items from Binghamton University Students
Today, May 16, 2024, the Volunteers with the Binghamton Move Out Project announced that they held the last of a three-day collection event on the campus of Binghamton University, as students pack up and move out for the semester.
The Move Out Project helps to divert waste from the landfill and gives students a convenient way to donate items they would otherwise plan to throw away.
Volunteers operated out of several tents on the Binghamton University campus, collecting unwanted items from departing students. Some items included non-perishable food, personal care items, clothing, and small appliances.

Donated items are sorted, weighed, and distributed to community organizations in June. According to the Binghamton Move Out Project, this is one of two on-campus collection methods each year. The other collection process - a bin system - employs bins on the BU campus where students are allowed to donate items at any time during the semester.
The end of the semester is extremely busy for students, and making it easy for them to donate is the key to avoiding a mass amount of waste at this time of year. It just makes sense to connect university students and the community this way, and the best part about the project is getting these items into the hands of those who can really use them. Thank you to my project co-lead Chris Harasta, our on-campus partners, and our wonderful team of Coordinators and volunteers for making this possible. - MOP Founder and Co-Coordinator Christina Fuller
Last year (2024), over 15,000 pounds of donations came from on-campus collections. Donations are distributed through the Greater Binghamton community, including The Children’s Home, RISE, and the Addiction Center of Broome County.
Even off-campus students can contribute to the Move Out Project. To request a pick-up appointment, click HERE. The last day to donate items is May 31st. The Move Out Project is administered by the Susquehanna Group of the Sierra Club, in partnership with Binghamton University Residential Life, Facilities Management, Binghamton University Office of Sustainability, BU Dining Services Sustainability, and The Union.
