Binghamton New York-Inspired Halloween Costumes: Embracing Local Icons & Creativity
As we inch closer to Halloween, my neighborhood is becoming quite decorated with all sorts of Halloween displays and inflatables. It seems that Halloween has been rivaling the Christmas season when it comes to decorating homes and lawns.
I think back fondly when I was a kid, getting into the Halloween spirit, ready to take that trip to the local J.J. Newberry store to pick out a Halloween costume. Back then, they were really simple, and cheaply made.
Remember those plastic masks with the elastic band in the back to hold it in place on your head? It always seemed to be too tight.
Anyway, for fun, I thought I would ask a question on social media if you were to go trick-or-treating or to a Halloween costume party and your costume had to have a local (Southern Tier New York) theme, what would it be?

As I expected, there were some interesting answers, along with some photos as well. For example, John L. commented "Considering Rick Baker was born in Binghamton, I'd be tempted to go with a Wolfman or Planet of the Apes.
Vicki R.'s choice would be Stephanie Courtney, who plays the character Flo from the Progressive Insurance commercials. Flo attended and graduated from Binghamton University.
Several mention various characters from the Twilight Zone, and that makes sense. Lots to choose from the mind of Rod Serling.
Here are some other responses that are very local:
David M. would be dressed up as a giant Spiedie. Definitely local.
Annie L. - How about a carousel with horses spinning around you with carousel music playing?
Chelsea M. - a two-person costume as a carousel horse.
Dannbobbie M. would go as a local hockey player.
