I love roller coasters. How about you? I've been on many coasters throughout my lifetime, but there is one type of coaster that I have yet to try but would love to.

It's a mountain coaster. What is that you ask? Well, it's a roller coaster that uses gravity and the natural elevation of the land to provide a fun ride. There are many across the country and throughout the world.

Basically, you sit in a cart that is on a fixed track. The cart (and you) gets pulled to the top of a mountain or hill via a chain, and once you are at the tip, the cart twists and winds down the track (and the hill) at a rather fast pace. But don't worry, your cart has manual brakes to slow down those who don't have the need for speed.

Did you know that the USA's longest mountain coaster is right here in New York State? It's the Cliffside Coaster, and it is located at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid. Many ski resorts build mountain coasters to bring in people during the non-skiing months.

Would you take a ride on a mountain coaster? I think a ride down a hill or mountain during the fall foliage time would be quite a treat. You can take a virtual ride on the Cliffside Coaster in the video below.

It's interesting to note that from the very beginning of your climb to the top, there is audio in the coaster that gives you a history lesson of the Lake Placid Olympics, and once you get going downhill, you are informed of the upcoming twists and turns.

If the voice sounds familiar, it's John Morgan from the movie 'Cool Runnings.'

Maybe the virtual ride will get you in the mood for a real mountain coaster ride. Here are three other mountain coasters to check out with a virtual ride.

Greek Peak's  Nor’Easter Mountain Coaster at The Adventure Center, Cortland, NY

The Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster at Holliday Valley in Ellicottville, New York

Alpine Mountain Coaster at Mountain Creek in Vernon, New Jersey.

Enjoy your ride!
