New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is offering a proposal for free tuition at public colleges to residents whose household income is less than $125,000.

Republican State Senator Fred Akshar of Broome County says, while he is concerned about the financial burden of college debt, he has reservations about the Governor’s proposal that he says would put unfair pressure on taxpayers.

Akshar says the state currently spends a billion dollars a year on tuition assistance.  He says he wants to see more details before passing final judgement.

Some local college leaders say they are also concerned that the measure could hurt smaller schools since students may opt to go to the larger, more expensive colleges instead.
