Places that close are a part of life. Most of the time, when we report on a closure, it's for a local, regional or national business. Sometimes it's a medical facility or maybe a church due to low attendance.

It's not often that we hear of a college closing it's doors, but there have been a few just in New York State that have closed for various reasons. We were surprised and saddened to hear of the closure of Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, New York, just southeast of Syracuse, a year ago (June 30, 2023.)

According to the New York State Education Department, the Cazenovia College Board of Trustees determined that due to financial concerns, it had to close down the college.

The NYSED website lists 15 colleges in the Empire State that have closed in the past eight years, since 2016. In 2023, three colleges closed (including Cazenovia) and so far in 2024,  there are four announced closures, and one recently closed.

The Long Island Business Institute

LIBI closed on January 27, 2024, by the board of directors. The college had two locations in the New York City area.

Wells College

The Wells College Board of Trustees has voted to cease educational activities at the institution at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year, due to significant financial challenges. The college is located in Aurora, New York, on Cayuga Lake.

College of Saint Rose

The College of Saint Rose Board of Trustees voted to cease academic instruction after the end of the 2023-2024 academic year. The anticipated last date of instruction at The College of Saint Rose will be June 21, 2024. The closure is due to a decline in enrollment and a shrinking pool of graduating high school graduates in New York and the northeast. The college is located in Albany.

The King's College (Potential Closure - No Current Educational Activity)

According to the NYSED website, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education acted to acknowledge the institutional closure of The King's College (NY) while on adverse action status. Accreditation ceased effective August 31, 2023. There are currently no students enrolled in any academic programs at the college and there has been no educational activity at the college since July 28, 2023.

ASA College (Potential Closure - No Current Educational Activity)

The NYSED notes that the institution has not confirmed that it intends to close, but there has been no educational activity at the institution since February 24, 2023. ASA College is located in Brooklyn.
