The Department of Environmental Conservation says goose season in the Upstate Zone runs from September 1 through the 25. Squirrel season also opens September 1.
Migratory game bird hunting season starts later for the Central and Eastern Long Island Zones while the Western Long Island zone is not until October. The other zones’ seasons run from September 6 to the 30th.
Bird hunters have to register every year with the DEC Harvest Information Program and be licensed through the Department of Environmental Conservation.
Scientists work with the DEC to calculate the number of hunters in relation to the number of birds in the wild population.
Licensing and information on hunting seasons in New York State can be found at www.dec.ny.gov.
Hunters can look forward to stalking larger game in a couple of weeks.
The early bear season for parts of southeastern New York that includes areas to the east and south of Broome County, including Delaware County, goes from September 10 to the 25th. Bow season for black bear begins for the Southern Zone on October 1 through November 18 and December 12 to the 20th with regular bear season November 19th through December 11.
For Whitetail Deer, the regular season doesn’t open until November 19th in the Southern Zone with early bow season starting October 1. The antlerless deer season in select areas begins on September 10.
In addition to finding more information on the dates and regulations found at the DEC website, hunters can call 1-866-933-2257.
