The oldest business on Court Street in downtown Binghamton is winding down operations.

M&D-R-Nuts is preparing to close its doors at the spot its occupied for more than 85 years.

Owner David Bradstreet last month told WNBF News he expected to shut down the business around June 10.

The small shop at 45 Court Street has remained open for limited hours this week but Bradstreet's plans haven't changed.

Speaking inside the store Thursday afternoon, Bradstreet looked back on the years since he acquired the business in 2010. He said "it's been wonderful... we have the best customers in the world."

Bradstreet said "everybody who comes to the candy shop is in a good mood."

In recent days, though, the customers who've been visiting have been saddened by the news that the store is about to close. They've been nostalgic as they've shared their fond memories with Bradstreet.

Although Bradstreet has received offers to acquire M&D-R-Nuts, the prospective buyers have wanted to operate the business in its existing location. But the owner of the building - former Mayor Richard David - has said he has "several ideas" for future use of the space.

Bradstreet said it's still possible someone will come along who will buy the business and move it to a new location.

For now, Bradstreet is working to pack things up at the Court Street site where a nut shop has operated since 1939. Going through stored items in the basement, he said "we're seeing stuff we've never seen before."

The shop remains open on a day-by-day basis but Bradstreet expects to turn out the lights out for the final time within the next couple of weeks.
