Authorities say they don’t know if heavy rain April 7-8 is to blame for a giant pothole that damaged over a half-dozen vehicles in Interstate 81 in Northern Broome overnight.

Broome County Emergency Services officials say the crater in the right-hand lane just before the Whitney Point exit (Exit 8) on I-81 northbound damaged ten vehicles shortly after 12 a.m. April 8. A New York State Trooper noted it was lucky the situation only involved popped tires and no crashes or injuries.

Authorities say the New York State Department of Transportation was notified to address the problem but they advised motorists to still exercise caution when approaching that area.

The State D.O.T. operates a toll-free, 24-hour hotline for reporting the road hazards.  Drivers can call 1-800-POTHOLE, that’s 1-800-768-4653 when it is safe to do so to report potholes on state roads, including the Thruway.
