Fraudulent Unemployment Filings Spike In Northern Tier
State Police in the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania have been getting an increase in reports of people having unemployment benefits falsely filed in their names.
Officials say you should file a report with the police, notify your employer and check with the U.S. Department of Labor website for a listing of how to report unemployment fraud in your state.
While someone fraudulently filing for unemployment insurance in another person's name may not immediately impact the victim’s credit rating or bank account, information obtained through the action could damage future online identity issues.
In the local cases, the Pennsylvania State Police say they are investigating and provided information to the victims on how to file an online fraud report with the Internal Revenue Service.
