The Foster Grandparent Program, operated through the Broome County Office for Aging, is looking for more participants.

Program Field Supervisor, Virginia Jones and Foster Grandparent Nancy Fedorwicz, Speaking on the July 20 edition of the local public affairs show, Southern Tier Close Up talk about the ins and outs of being a classroom grandma or grandpa.

Jones says there are currently 50 Foster Grandparents serving in Broome but she would like to have at least ten more signed on for the fall.

Fedorwicz says in her three years as a Foster Grandma, she has not had one bad experience either with the children or staff at the daycare center where she volunteers.

Participants provide support for teachers and staff and help children with school work or just play.

Jones says lower-income seniors over the age of 55 may be eligible for the program and are paid an hourly stipend for their contribution.
